BLU-U or blue light therapy is most commonly used to treat sun damage and precancerous skin growths.  It can also be used to treat acne and acne scarring.  This treatment is safe for all skin types.

Who is a candidate?

Anyone who is suffering from actinic keratoses (a precancerous growth), early-stage basal-cell and squamous-cell carcinomas, and acne.

What to expect

When you arrive in the office for your BLU-U treatment you will thoroughly clean the skin and a medication called Levulan will be applied to the skin.  Levulan makes acne causing bacteria and precancerous sun spots more sensitive to the BLU-U treatments.  You will sit in the office 1-2 hours with the medication on the areas being treated.  You will then begin the BLU-U treatment which involves sitting under the blue light for approximately 17 minutes.  After your treatment you will not be able to have any sun exposure for 48 hours.  You may experience slight burning or stinging that can last up to 24 hours after your treatment.  Redness, swelling, scaling, and crusting of the skin may occur. These are signs the treatment is working.  It is very important to wear sunscreen and protective clothing after your treatments.
