We all become a little lax with sunscreen application in the winter season but doing so can be quite harmful, especially if you are a lover of the slopes!
Winter skin is more sensitive to sun than tanned summer skin, so those harsh UV rays can be just as damaging on the slopes as they are on the beach. Snow actually reflects up to 80 percent of the UV light from the sun, meaning you are often hit by the same rays twice!
Also, being in a mountainous region with a higher altitude means our risk of sun damage is increased even more. “UV radiation exposure increases 4 to 5 percent with every 1,000 feet above sea level”.
So how should we protect ourselves? Use sunscreen of course! Here are some tips on how to successfully apply your protective layer:
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is best! Apply 30min prior to going outside for a long period of time.
- Apply it liberally! Don’t skimp on your skin health. Apply at least a teaspoon of sunscreen to your face.
- After sweating and long wear, sunscreen can rub off! Reapply every 2 hours.
- Cover the odd spots. Have you ever had burnt eyelids or scalp?! Ouch! Don’t miss your ears, eye area, neck, scalp and even your hands!
- Lip balm is a must! Our lips are very sensitive to cold temperatures. Use at least 15 SPF on your lips.
Now you can safely go out in the winter rays and feel confident you are protecting yourself from skin cancer and premature aging!
On that note, don’t forget to get a yearly skin check to make sure you can catch any harmful spots and moles before it’s too late!
