What causes acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It can manifest as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, cysts, or nodules, and can appear on the face, chest, back, and shoulders. While acne is most common during adolescence, it can affect individuals of all ages.

Here a few factors that can also contribute to acne:

1. Excess Sebum (Oil) Production

Sebaceous glands in the skin produce an oily substance called sebum. When these glands produce too much sebum, it can mix with dead skin cells and clog hair follicles, leading to acne.

2. Clogged Hair Follicles

Normally, dead skin cells are shed from the skin’s surface. However, when excess oil is present, these cells can become trapped inside the hair follicles, forming a plug. This plug can lead to the development of blackheads or whiteheads.

3. Bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes)

The skin naturally hosts bacteria, including Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). When hair follicles become clogged, P. acnes can multiply, leading to inflammation and the development of pimples, pustules, or cysts.

4. Hormonal Changes

Hormones, particularly androgens, increase during puberty and can lead to the enlargement of sebaceous glands and increased sebum production. Hormonal fluctuations related to menstruation, pregnancy, and the use of certain contraceptives can also trigger acne in women.

5. Inflammation

Inflammation is a natural immune response, but in the case of acne, it can cause the walls of clogged follicles to break, leading to the formation of more severe types of acne like nodules or cysts.

6. Diet

Some studies suggest that certain foods, particularly those high in refined sugars and dairy products, may exacerbate acne. However, the relationship between diet and acne is complex and varies from person to person.

7. Stress

Stress doesn’t directly cause acne, but it can worsen the condition. When stressed, the body produces more androgens, leading to increased oil production and potential acne flare-ups.

8. Medication

Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, androgens, and lithium, can cause or worsen acne.

9. Cosmetic Products

Using oily or greasy cosmetics can block pores and lead to the development of acne, especially if they’re not labeled as non-comedogenic (products that don’t clog pores).

10. Genetics

Acne can run in families. If your parents had acne, you’re more likely to develop it as well.

Light Therapy
Certain lasers, pulsed light sources and radio-frequency devices that don’t injure the epidermis can be used to treat scars. These Dermatologist acne treatments heat the dermis and cause new skin to form. After several treatments, acne scars may appear less noticeable. This treatment has shorter recovery times than some other methods. But you may need to repeat the procedure more often and results are subtle.

Collagen stimulation for healing acne scar and redness.
