3 Ideas on How to Prevent Fever Blisters

3 Ideas on How to Prevent Fever Blisters

My mom use to always say she could look at someone with a fever blister (or cold sore) and get one.  So as you can imagine How to Prevent Fever Blisters is one of the most often asked question at DermaBlue.  Some people are just more prone to getting these irritating blisters!

They are highly contagious, painful and can be embarrassing. Unfortunately, they do take anywhere from several days to 2 weeks to heal. Instead of suffering for 2 weeks, let’s learn what we can do to PREVENT fever blisters before they start!

  1. Protect your Lips: Excessive sun exposure can trigger a breakout if you are prone to getting cold sores. For this cold sore treatment, try to use a lip balm that is at least SPF 30. Also, don’t apply directly to the infected area, try to use a q-tip so you don’t spread the virus.
  2. De-Stress: When stressed, your body in general is more susceptible to disease which can awaken the dormant herpes virus and cause a new breakout. So take time to meditate daily and don’t worry about things out of your control!
  3. Change your Diet: What we put in our body can impact our overall health, after all, food is medicine. Certain dietary habits – such as following a diet rich in lysine (fish, chicken, lamb and beef tend to be high in lysine) and low in arginine, or eating plenty of foods that contain quercetin (apples, most berries and peppers are high in quercetin), are now known to reduce cold sore outbreaks.

However, despite our efforts, we may still get outbreaks. If you don’t feel like waiting 2 weeks for them to heal, call your Asheville Dermatology Office, DermaBlue, today and we can prescribe a cold sore treatment for you and get you back in action quickly.
