Asheville, North Carolina is quickly becoming a destination for the surrounding areas for many reasons, one of them being its growing network of med spas and cosmetic dermatology clinics like ours. In addition to recognizable and popular injectable treatments like BOTOX®, Dysport, lip fillers, and microneedling, we also provide the ever-popular laser hair removal treatments here at our Asheville location.
Because of the growing interest, its worth exploring laser hair removal treatments in a bit more depth here.Â
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a simple cosmetic treatment that uses specialized lasers to remove unwanted body hair. The laser works to remove hair follicles by targeting the melanin inside each follicle through intense, targeted heat. The heat damages the follicle, which prevents the hair from regrowing.
Why choose laser hair removal in Asheville?
Patients choose laser hair removal as a more permanent solution than shaving or waxing. Anyone who regularly shaves their legs will tell you how time consuming it is— not to mention expensive when you factor in the amount of razors and shaving cream you need to purchase every year! There’s also the potential for irritating nicks and razor burn. Waxing is also an expensive, painful process that requires regular upkeep.Â
Laser hair removal, on the other hand, only requires a handful of sessions to permanently reduce hair and prevent it from growing back for good. In the long run, it can save countless hours of time and a small fortune on razors or waxing appointments.
Another great benefit of laser hair removal is that it can be used on almost anywhere in the body, including:
- legs
- arms
- armpits
- bikini line
- back
- chest
- face
What does the laser hair removal treatment look like?
The first step in the laser hair removal process is to schedule a free consultation at DermaBlue. This consultation is important because it allows our laser technicians to meet with you to discuss and examine your target treatment area, provide an estimate for how many treatments you’ll likely need, and determine if laser hair is ultimately right for your goals.Â
How to prepare for your first laser hair removal treatment in Asheville
Before the treatment, you’ll need to do a bit of prep work. Your laser technician might recommend avoiding direct sun for a few days prior or refraining from using certain skincare products. Lastly, you’ll need to shave the area (one last time!) for the laser to be able to target each individual follicle.
During the laser hair removal treatment
The treatment itself is very straightforward. You’ll put on protective glasses to shield your eyes from the laser as the laser device is held against your skin and pulses of lasers are beamed at the target area. Some patients report a stinging, along with a heating sensation as the laser works to damage the follicles.
Treatments for smaller areas may only take a few minutes, depending on the density and thickness of the hair follicles. Larger areas will take longer, potentially up to an hour or more for both legs, for example.
Â
After the laser hair removal treatment
After your treatment your skin may feel red and swollen, sort of like a sunburn. This typically only lasts for a few hours after treatment. You may be give some cooling aloe vera gel or something similar to put on the treatment area to soothe the burnt sensation. Lastly, you’ll definitely want to avoid direct sunlight on the area for several days, and to use sunscreen for any outdoor activities in the following weeks.
Over the next few weeks, you’ll notice hair shedding from the treatment area and it will regrow slower and thinner. As we mentioned before, one session will likely not be effective in removing 100% of the hair in the treatment area, and you’ll need a few follow up treatments to see complete results.
