Rosacea is a chronic disorder of veins under the skin, which causes general flushing and redness that comes and goes on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. In some cases, rosacea can appear as acne bumps (papules) and pimples (pustules). Over time the redness becomes ruddier and more persistent and visible blood vessels may appear. In some cases, the nose may become swollen and enlarged from excess tissue.
The symptoms of rosacea can look different from person to person, but often include one or more of the following:
Rosacea is a benign condition that may be genetic or due to abnormally high levels of specific peptides and enzymes in the bloodstream. Other studies have suggested that rosacea outbreaks are influenced by bacterial proliferation in the small intestine. Regardless of rosacea’s root cause, its appearance is provoked by exposure to irritants or “triggers” that makes someone blush and flush uncontrollably.
Rosacea symptoms can vary from patient to patient so the treatments must be tailored for each individual case. Here at DermaBlue, we can offer a combination of treatments to provide the most relief as quickly as possible.
We also offer a variety of the latest topical creams, lotions, and serums to relieve rosacea symptoms such as dryness, pustules, swelling, itching and burning. These creams contain anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities that help control rosacea in between early laser treatments and keep your skin hydrated and clear. Moisturizers and cleansers are also important for skin maintenance and the control of rosacea. Therapeutic cleansers that do not contain harsh soap, oil-free moisturizers and sunscreens all help inhibit rosacea flare-ups caused by known triggers. Various oral and topical meds can be prescribed to treat pimples and redness. Oral antibiotics and topical lotions and gels can reduce inflammation and redness.

Vascular Laser Treatments are extremely effective to improve broken capillaries on the face and nose. At Dermablue, we offer a combination of lasers to effectively and safely break down the veins under the skin, which help correct visible redness and makes future flares less noticeable. The lasers offer long-term results; are gentle and safe and will help even out overall skin tone on all skin types.
Our DermaV laser is one of the newest and most effective laser treatments for rosacea. It is more adjustable, more precise, and more effective than previous lasers. Plus, DermaV is suitable for all skin types and can treat a wide range of skin and vascular concerns, including redness and discoloration, hyperpigmentation and age spots, broken capillaries and spider veins, as well as rosacea.
The exact cause of rosacea isn’t fully understood, but it appears to involve a combination of genetic factors, immune system responses, and environmental triggers. Blood vessel abnormalities may play a role, as well as microscopic mites that naturally live on facial skin. Common triggers that can worsen rosacea include sun exposure, hot weather, spicy foods, alcohol, hot beverages, stress, certain skincare products, and some medications. Each person may have different triggers, so identifying your specific ones through careful observation is important for managing the condition.
Treatment for rosacea typically includes both topical and oral medications depending on severity. Topical treatments like metronidazole gel, azelaic acid, and brimonidine can help reduce redness and inflammation. For more severe cases with bumps and pustules, oral antibiotics like doxycycline or minocycline are often prescribed. Laser and light therapies can effectively treat visible blood vessels and persistent redness. Professional treatments like IPL (intense pulsed light) and certain lasers specifically target the redness and blood vessels associated with rosacea.
Most rosacea treatments require patience, as improvements develop gradually over several weeks to months. Topical treatments typically show initial improvements in 3 to 6 weeks, with continued progress over 2 to 3 months of consistent use. Oral antibiotics may provide faster relief for inflammatory symptoms, often showing improvement within 2 to 4 weeks. Laser and light treatments may require multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart to achieve optimal results. It’s important to continue treatment even after seeing improvement, as rosacea tends to return if treatment is stopped.
A gentle, simple skincare routine is essential for managing rosacea. Use mild, fragrance-free cleansers and avoid scrubbing or harsh exfoliation. Apply a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer daily to maintain the skin barrier. Daily sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is crucial, as sun exposure is a major rosacea trigger. Avoid products containing alcohol, menthol, camphor, or strong fragrances that can irritate sensitive rosacea-prone skin. Many people with rosacea benefit from mineral-based makeup and skincare products specifically designed for sensitive skin.
