By Dr. David LaMond, Medical Director of DermaBlue
Radio-frequency (RF) microneedling has become one of the most advanced tools in aesthetic medicine for improving skin texture, laxity, acne scarring, and body concerns. But as with any energy-based device, safety and control matter—and not all devices perform equally. At DermaBlue, our guiding principle is safe technology + expert training = predictable results. That’s why we use the Lutronic Genius system exclusively.
What patients are asking online
Many of our patients come in asking:
- “Is RF microneedling really safe, especially on sensitive areas like the neck and body?”
- “How do different devices compare? I’ve heard of the Morpheus8, but what’s the difference?”
- “What about downtime, skin types, and risk of complications?”
- “How many treatments will I need and what results can I expect?”
We’ll address all of those below.
Genius is Designed with Safety in Mind
With the Genius device, several key features set it apart:
- Real-time tissue impedance monitoring: The device continuously senses skin resistance and adapts energy output immediately, preventing excessive thermal injury. Cynosure Lutronic+1
- Intelligent Energy Delivery: Because it measures in real-time, it delivers the “right” amount of RF energy—not simply a “set it high and hope” approach. Cynosure Lutronic
- Insulated gold-plated microneedles and controlled penetration: These tools ensure the thermal effect is delivered beneath the epidermis, minimizing surface damage and risk of pigment change. NOVA Plastic Surgery and Dermatology
- Safe for all skin types including darker tones: Because the energy is controlled beneath the surface, the risk of hyper-pigmentation is lower—important for our diverse patients. Cynosure Lutronic EMEA
Why our decade of experience matters
At DermaBlue, we’ve been offering RF microneedling for nearly 10 years. That means:
- We’ve accumulated thousands of treatments on the face, neck, and body.
- We know how to train and supervise our providers so that the device is used within the safest, most effective parameters.
- We understand the nuances of body areas (arms, abdomen, thighs, knees) and how skin thickness, tissue resistance, and healing differ from facial skin.
- Because we own the technology (not “rent” or “borrow”), we can invest in ongoing training, protocols, and documentation of safety.
- We’ve integrated optimal pre- and post-care (topical preparation, numbing, aftercare to minimize redness/swelling, sun-protection, and follow-up) to maximize results and minimize risks.
How Genius compares to Morpheus8
One of the devices you may have heard about is Morpheus8. While it is a respected option by some providers, we feel some key distinctions are worth noting:
- There have been reported adverse events using Morpheus8 in very deep settings (for example fat loss, indentations, etc.). FDA Access Data+1
- While Morpheus8 is FDA-cleared for certain uses, the depth and energy combinations matter. Using “higher/deeper” settings without appropriately controlled feedback can increase risk (for example scarring, fat loss, nerve injury). FDA Access Data
- By contrast, the Genius system’s real-time feedback means we have a higher degree of control, which becomes important when we’re treating sensitive zones like the neck or under jawline, or body areas with variable tissue thickness.
In short: With Genius, we don’t simply set “deep and powerful” and hope for the best. We monitor, adapt, and customize because we make safety and precision our priority.
What this means for you: Face, neck and body
Because of the advanced control of the Genius system and our experience:
Face & Neck
We can safely treat jowls, under-chin, neck bands, fine lines around mouth and cheeks. The precision control means low risk of surface burns, pigmentation, or unexpected fat loss.
Body
Arms, abdomen, flanks, thighs and knees respond differently because of thicker skin, fat, and fibrous septae. With Genius we can adjust depth and energy accordingly, delivering safe volumization and tightening for body areas.
Genius RF Microneedling is safe for all skin types
Because of the device’s insulation and feedback, we can treat patients with higher Fitzpatrick skin types with reduced risk of pigment change.

RF Microneedling FAQ
Typically, 2-4 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart will give significant improvement. Because the device stimulates collagen production over time, you’ll continue to see improvement in the following 2-3 months.
With Genius you may experience mild redness, swelling or warmth for 24-48 hours; most patients are back to work the next day and typical visible “stamping” marks resolve in 2-3 days. RealSelf.com
Yes, but only when done by a trained provider using device parameters adapted to that area’s thinner tissue and proximity to neurovascular structures. At DermaBlue we have treated hundreds of neck/chin cases with excellent safety.
As with all medical aesthetic treatments, risks exist, but they are minimized with proper device, training and protocol. Risks may include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, pinpoint bleeding, and in very rare cases pigment change.
RF microneedling is not a surgical facelift. It is a non-surgical skin tightening and volumizing tool. It can significantly improve laxity and texture but if you have advanced skin sagging you may still need surgery. We make sure patients have realistic expectations.
