TABLE OF CONTENTS

In recent years, preventative Botox has become the newest buzzword in the world of cosmetic procedures. Especially popular among younger patients, it promises to ward off the early signs of wrinkles and aging before they become deeply etched in our skin. But what exactly is preventative Botox? Why is it so popular? Does it even work?

At Dermablue, we understand the desire to maintain a youthful appearance and the growing interest in preventative Botox treatments. As the Medical Director, I want to provide you with a balanced overview of the benefits and considerations of this approach.

What is Preventative Botox?

Before we talk about the preventative aspect of Botox, let’s refresh ourselves on what botox is. BOTOX® is a common cosmetic treatment that involves injecting botulinum toxin into the facial muscles to temporarily paralyze them, which prevents the formation of wrinkles and lines that develop due to facial expressions.

The toxin usually takes about a week to fully paralyze the muscles, and lasts around 6 months on average.

Preventative Botox refers to the use of Botox injections in younger individuals, typically those in their late 20s to early 30s who may begin to notice slight wrinkles starting to form—specially crows feet or on forehead.

As the name implies, the primary goal of preventative botox is to prevent the formation of “dynamic” wrinkles that appear with facial expressions like frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows before they develop into more permanent or “static” wrinkles, which are visible even when the face is at rest.

Why is Preventative Botox so Popular?

As botox in general becomes more commonplace and less taboo, preventative botox also has become more popular and culturally accepted.

Several factors contribute to the rising popularity of preventative Botox:

1. Early Action, Better Results

Many people believe that addressing wrinkles before they become deeply ingrained can lead to better long-term outcomes. By starting treatments early, individuals aim to maintain a youthful appearance for a longer period.

2. Increased Awareness and Accessibility

With the rise of social media and the influence of celebrities and influencers, there is greater awareness and acceptance of cosmetic procedures. Botox has become more accessible and normalized, leading to increased interest among younger demographics.

3. Non-Invasive and Quick

Botox is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment with little to no downtime. The procedure is quick, often taking just 10-15 minutes, and patients can resume their normal daily activities immediately afterwards, making it convenient for those with busy lifestyles.

4. Safe & Effective

Botox is widely available, and after having been on the market for decades, it’s tried and true—the botox formula is manufactured to strict medical standards and sold in 98 different countries and counting. When treated by a trained professional, it is extremely safe and FDA-approved since 2002.

How Does Preventative Botox Work?

As mentioned earlier, botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles responsible for causing wrinkles. When injected into specific facial muscles, it blocks nerve signals, preventing the muscles from contracting.

Here’s what a typical Botox treatment process looks like:

  1. Consultation: The process begins with a consultation with a qualified practitioner to discuss your goals, examine your facial expressions, and determine the appropriate areas for injection.

  2. Injection and Treatment: Using a fine needle, Botox is injected into targeted muscles. The number of injections and the amount of Botox used in a specific area will vary based on an individual’s age, goals, and needs.

  3. Relaxation of Muscles: Within a few days to a week, the treated muscles begin to relax, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and preventing new ones from forming.

  4. Maintenance: The effects of Botox typically last 3-6 months. Regular maintenance treatments are required to maintain the results and prevent dynamic wrinkles from forming again.

Is Preventative Botox Effective?

The effectiveness of preventative Botox largely depends on the patient’s adherence to treatment schedules. I find preventative Botox is a more subtle treatment, with lower satisfaction vs traditional Botox dosing and treatment.

You will need to weigh the pros and cons and discuss your goals with an expert injector before committing to preventative botox treatments.

Pros of Preventative BOTOX

  • Prevents Wrinkle Formation
By reducing muscle activity, Botox helps prevent the development of dynamic wrinkles, which can eventually turn into static wrinkles.

  • Subtle Enhancements
When administered correctly, preventative Botox provides subtle improvements, maintaining a natural and refreshed appearance.

  • Delays Aging Signs
Starting Botox treatments early can help maintain a youthful appearance and delay the visible signs of aging.

  • Improves Skin Texture
Regular Botox treatments can contribute to smoother skin texture over time.

Cons of Preventative Botox

  • Cost
Regular Botox treatments can be expensive and time-consuming,  considering the need for ongoing maintenance several times per year.

  • Temporary Results: Botox effects are not permanent and require regular upkeep to maintain the benefits.

  • Potential Side Effects
As with any procedure involving injections, there is always a risk of side effects, including bruising, swelling, or, in rare cases, asymmetry or drooping.

  • Variable Results
The effectiveness of Botox varies based on individual factors like muscle strength and skin type, meaning results can differ from person to person.

To reiterate: preventative Botox can work well in some cases when patients receive appropriate dosages. However, we often find that patients who request lower dosages for a more subtle “baby botox” approach often return unsatisfied with the longevity of their treatment.

Dosage Considerations

For preventative Botox treatments, the dosage is generally lower compared to treatments aimed at reducing existing wrinkles. The goal is to relax the muscles to prevent wrinkle formation rather than to smooth out deep-set lines. Here are some general notes about botox dosages:

• Preventative Botox Dose
Typically involves a lower dosage since the objective is muscle relaxation for wrinkle prevention.

• Regular Botox Dose
Often requires a higher dosage to address existing wrinkles and achieve the desired smoothing effect.

• Personalized Treatment
The exact dosage is tailored to the individual, taking into account factors such as the treatment area, muscle strength, and the patient’s response to Botox.

At Dermablue, we strive to provide personalized and effective treatments to help you achieve your aesthetic goals, so we will discuss your needs thoroughly in order to get the optimal dosage and outcome.

FAQ

Can Botox really be preventative?

Botox can’t prevent wrinkles and lines from forming entirely, but Botox can help minimize the appearance of wrinkles as long as treatments are started before deeper wrinkles are formed, and as long as treatments are maintained

What is the best age for preventative Botox?

The best age to start preventative botox is before major wrinkles begin to form and while the skin still has quite a bit of elasticity—usually mid-to-late 20’s and early 30s.

How much does it cost to get preventative Botox?

The cost for botox varies from person to person, depending on the amount of treatment needed and patient’s goals. Additionally, the price of BOTOX tends to fluctuate. However, Botox typically costs around $13 per unit.

Botox®

BOTOX® and Dysport are neuromodulators. These types of facial injectables target the muscles responsible for facial expressions. By temporarily blocking nerve signals, they relax these muscles, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines caused by repetitive muscle contractions.

Fillers

Cosmetic fillers offer a non-surgical way to enhance facial features and restore youthful volume. Since many visible signs of aging can be traced back to volume loss, fillers can help replace what is lost to help restore a more youthful appearance. We offer the complete line of Juvederm Fillers.

Injectables

Aesthetic injectables are minimally invasive cosmetic treatments that involve injecting various substances beneath the skin to achieve a range of aesthetic goals. They can target aspects of facial aging, addressing concerns like wrinkles and fine lines, loss of facial volume, & uneven skin texture.

CoolSculpting® Elite

CoolSculpting is a proven technology that is safe and effective. It is proven to work extremely well and rivals surgical results with little to no downtime. Cryolipolysis, or freezing fat; gently and effectively reduces unwanted fat by up to 25% or more per session. Freeze fat & tone muscle.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a commonly used cosmetic procedure that utilizes concentrated beams of highly focused light to eradicate hair on various parts of the body. This method targets the hair follicles, damaging them to the extent that hair is unlikely to grow in that spot again.

Laser Resurfacing

Fractional laser resurfacing is the most effective laser treatment available for wrinkle reduction. At Dermablue, we brought the best possible technology for laser resurfacing to Asheville using the CORE CO2 fractional laser. Fractional laser resurfacing is the most effective laser treatment.
