DermaBlue is proud to welcome Dr. Richard Levine, MD, FAAD—a board-certified Mohs surgeon with over two decades of experience—to the Asheville area. Contact us to schedule your skin cancer screening with Dr. Levine.
Dr. Richard Levine is a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon whose career reflects a genuine passion for every facet of dermatologic medicine — from general skin care to complex skin cancer surgery.
Originally from Toronto, Dr. Levine completed his honors biology degree and medical training at the University of Western Ontario, followed by an internal medicine internship and residency at the University of Toronto and a dermatology residency at McGill University in Montreal.
After more than 20 years of practice in Colorado — where he built a reputation for exceptional surgical outcomes and compassionate patient care — Dr. Levine recently relocated to the Asheville area. He brings with him a deep commitment to both precision medicine and the patient experience.
Dr. Levine is a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and enjoys practicing the full spectrum of dermatology and dermatologic surgery. Outside of the office, he spends time with family and stays active through cycling and tennis.
Mohs micrographic surgery is the most precise and effective treatment available for common skin cancers. It’s performed in stages, right in the office — and unlike many other treatments, it lets your surgeon confirm complete cancer removal before you leave.
During Mohs surgery, Dr. Levine removes the visible tumor along with a thin layer of surrounding tissue. That tissue is processed and examined under a microscope on-site. If any cancer cells remain, he removes precisely targeted additional tissue — repeating the process only as many times as necessary. This technique spares as much healthy skin as possible while achieving the highest cure rates available.

Mohs surgery is typically completed in a single office visit — though the length varies depending on how many stages are needed. Here’s how the process works, from start to finish.
Dr. Levine reviews your biopsy results, examines the site, and confirms whether Mohs surgery is the right approach. He’ll walk you through what to expect, answer your questions, and schedule your procedure.
The treatment area is numbed with a local anesthetic — most patients experience little to no pain during the procedure. No general anesthesia is needed, and you’ll be awake and comfortable throughout.
Dr. Levine removes the tumor and a thin layer of surrounding tissue. You’ll wait comfortably while the tissue is prepared and examined under a microscope — typically 45 minutes to an hour per stage.
If any cancer cells are detected at the margins, Dr. Levine removes only the precise area involved — and the process repeats. Each additional stage targets only what remains. Most cases are resolved in 1–3 stages.
Once the cancer is fully clear, Dr. Levine repairs the wound. Depending on its size and location, repair may involve primary closure (sutures), a skin flap, a graft, or allowing the wound to heal naturally. The approach is always chosen with cosmetic outcome in mind.
Most patients return home the same day. You’ll receive detailed wound care instructions and schedule a follow-up visit to check healing and monitor for recurrence.
Mohs surgery is the gold-standard treatment for skin cancers in high-risk or cosmetically sensitive areas, and is particularly effective for cancers that have returned after prior treatment. Your dermatologist will recommend Mohs if your case meets one or more of the following criteria.
Mohs surgery is typically completed in a single office visit — though the length varies depending on how many stages are needed. Here’s how the process works, from start to finish.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so the treatment area is numbed before Dr. Levine makes the first incision. Most patients feel only mild pressure or movement—not pain. Some discomfort may occur as the anesthesia is injected, but this passes quickly. Post-procedure soreness is common and typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Depending on the scope of the treatment, you’ll want to plan to spend most of the day at our office, though many procedures are completed in 2–4 hours. Because tissue processing takes time between stages, and the number of stages isn’t known in advance, it’s best not to schedule anything else for the day of your surgery. Bring something to read or listen to—there will be waiting involved.
Some scarring is unavoidable with any surgery, but Mohs is specifically designed to minimize it. Because the technique removes the smallest possible amount of tissue needed for complete cancer clearance, the resulting wound is typically smaller than with traditional excision. Dr. Levine is experienced in wound repair techniques chosen to optimize cosmetic outcomes — including layered closures, flaps, and grafts when needed.
In most cases, a referral from your primary care provider or dermatologist is not required to schedule a consultation with Dr. Levine. However, we recommend checking with your insurance carrier, as some plans do require a referral for specialist visits. Our team is happy to help you navigate that process
Mohs micrographic surgery is considered a medically necessary procedure for qualifying skin cancers, and is covered by most major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.
Coverage for wound repair may vary. We recommend contacting your insurance provider prior to your consultation to understand your specific benefits and any out-of-pocket costs. We can help you navigate your insurance, however—just contact us!
You’ll receive detailed pre-operative instructions after your consultation.
In general: avoid blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, certain supplements) if your physician approves; eat a normal meal before you arrive; wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing; and arrange a ride home if you’d like, though most patients drive themselves. You should not use any numbing creams or apply anything to the area on the morning of surgery.
Most patients return to normal activity within a few days, depending on the size and location of the wound. You’ll be given specific wound care instructions to follow at home.
Common post-procedure experiences include mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness. Stitches (if used) are typically removed within 1–2 weeks. Dr. Levine will schedule a follow-up visit to check healing and answer any questions.
