Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery to remove or reposition excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle around the upper and/or lower eyelids. It’s done for cosmetic reasons (sagging, hooded eyelids, under-eye bags) or functionally, when upper eyelid skin droops enough to block vision.
Typical process for a blepharoplasty treatment:
Dr Levine will check eyelid skin laxity, fat herniation, brow position, and vision if functional impairment is suspected (sometimes a visual field test is required for insurance coverage).
Usually local anesthesia with sedation is needed; general anesthesia is an option for more extensive cases.
For an upper eyelid procedure, an incision is made along the natural eyelid crease, excess skin and fat are removed or repositioned, and the incision is closed with fine sutures.
For a lower eyelid treatment, Dr. Levine will make an incision either just below the lash line or inside the lower lid to remove or reposition fat and tighten skin.
The surgery typically lasts 1 to 3 hours depending on whether one or both lids, upper and/or lower, are treated.
Recovery will involve swelling and bruising for one to two weeks, cool compresses and lubricating drops for dry eyes, stitches (if external) removed in about a week, most people return to normal activities within 10 to 14 days, with final results settling over a few months.
Risks are similar with any surgery: infection, scarring, dry or irritated eyes, temporary blurred vision, asymmetry, and rarely more serious complications like ectropion (lower lid pulling down) or vision changes.
