Most hyaluronic acid lip fillers last about 6 to 12 months. Juvรฉderm Volbella XC, one of the fillers we use most often for lips, is FDA-approved for lip enhancement with results that can last up to 1 year. How long yours lasts depends on the product, how much is used, and your own body.
At DermaBlue in Asheville and Hendersonville, lip filler is one of the treatments we’re asked about most. Here’s what our injectors tell patients about how long it lasts, what to expect after treatment, and how to get the most from your results.
How long lip filler lasts, by product
Not every filler is the same, and not every filler is designed for lips. These are the Juvรฉderm products patients ask about most:
- Juvรฉderm Volbella XC: FDA-approved in 2016 for lip augmentation and for softening fine lines around the mouth. In clinical studies, results lasted up to 1 year. Volbella is a softer, smoother gel, so it’s a good fit for natural-looking volume and definition.
- Juvรฉderm Ultra XC: a thicker gel that some injectors use to add more noticeable volume. Your injector will explain whether it’s right for your lips and goals.
Your injector will recommend a product based on your lip shape, how much change you want and how you’d like your lips to look and feel. Learn more about the Juvรฉderm fillers we offer and our dermal filler treatments.
What makes lip filler last longer (or shorter)
Lips move constantly when you talk, eat and smile, so lip filler tends to break down a little faster than filler in less active areas. Other factors include:
- Your metabolism.
People with faster metabolisms, including very active people and athletes, may break filler down sooner. - The product and amount.
Different gels hold up differently, and a larger treatment may take longer to fade. - Your first treatment vs. touch-ups.
Many patients find that results last longer after a follow-up treatment. - Sun exposure and smoking.
Both can speed up how quickly your body breaks down hyaluronic acid. Daily SPF lip balm helps. - Hydration and skin care.
Hyaluronic acid holds water, so staying hydrated helps your lips look their best.
What to expect in the first 2 weeks
- Day 1โ3:
Swelling and tenderness are normal and usually peak in the first day or two. Lips may look bigger or uneven at first. Cold compresses help. - Days 3โ7:
Swelling goes down and bruising, if any, fades. Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for the first day or so, and skip lip massage unless your injector tells you to. - Weeks 1โ2:
The filler settles and integrates. This is when you’ll see your true result. - Around 2 weeks:
A good time for a follow-up if you’d like small adjustments.
If you notice severe pain, skin color changes or blanching, call our office right away.
Lip filler vs. lip flip
These two treatments are often confused, but they work differently.
- Lip filler adds volume and shape with hyaluronic acid. Results typically last about 6โ12 months.
- A lip flip uses a small amount of a neuromodulator such as BOTOXยฎ to relax the muscle above your upper lip, so the lip rolls slightly outward. It doesn’t add volume, and results usually last a few months.
Some patients combine the two. Your injector can help you decide what fits your goals. For a broader comparison, read Botox vs. fillers.
How much does lip filler cost in Asheville and Hendersonville?
Lip filler is usually priced by the syringe, and the total depends on the product and how many syringes you need. Many patients need just one syringe for natural-looking results. Your injector will give you an exact quote at your consultation.
